Fun in the Sun - 7/7/09

Well as promised folks, I made it out to the ranch today and boy was the trip a fun one. I arrived around 4:30 in the evening, the sun was shining and I was met with one of our regular hunters Danny Dalton and his nephew. Now Danny had stopped by the ranch for an early summer visit to take a break from life and wanted to show the beauty of our ranch to his nephew; who is about to serve our country in the Marines.

Being a prior military person myself (Army), I couldn’t help but share some stories of my time within our countries military. Sitting under the sun in one of the rocking chairs outside the lodge we continued to converse from topics related to hunting all the way down to the economy, and I must say it was enjoyable. However it was time to head out into the ranch, instead of heading out alone, we all jumped onto the Polaris Ranger we use and headed out.

Talk about a trip worth remembering, and this time I brought the camera! We started through down into one of the many ravines and decided it was time to get some snapshots of the amazing beauty of the ranch. I know I often mention the ravines, creeks, and the beauty of the woods so it is about time I shared some pictures with ya to back it up.

But that wasn’t all that we saw. As we made our way through the ranch we came across a buck standing in the distance, shadowed by a tree and watching us intently. I managed to stop and take a picture in time just before he darted up one the many deer trails that run through our ranch. What a sight it was and he wasn’t the only sight of the day. We continued in further to our ranch to one of the open fields, and as we emerged into the sun light it was like walking into a hunter’s paradise. Out of no where a buck with some does jumped up and took off towards the woods. I managed to get a snapshot just as they entered the woods and you can barely make out his antlers as he stops and check to see our next move before continuing on. If only I would have had a video camera, it was an amazing view.

As we continued our trek back into the dense woods we made our way over one of the many ravines to start our way back the way we came. Just a few moments later we came across another buck heading up the slope to reach the summit, but he stopped just enough times for a few pictures before darting the rest of the way up as we tried to get closer for a better view. I tell ya, today was definitely a day full of smiles and I wish it could have lasted longer.

Unfortunately however the trip had to come to an end as we once again went on the hunt for that elusive buck I reported back in June to you all. If you know anyone who has a helicopter, send them our way, this buck sure does know how to hide and is one step ahead of us at all times! The hunts sure will be challenging this year that is for sure, they are on top of their game so I hope our hunters are on top of theirs.

Until next time folks, enjoy the pictures and send me some comments. Tell me what you’d like to see and next time I’m out I’ll be sure to grab some pictures to give you more of an idea on just how amazing our ranch is.
