Today's forecast, Monster Bucks! - 6/30/09 |
As promised to all the great people who visit our website, I made it out to the Ranch first thing this morning. It was a nice cool 60 degrees or so, and the clouds were moving in for the rain that we are about to get sometime today. But that didn’t stop me from a trip through the ravines and woods.
Within the first couple of minutes I was rewarded with my first sighting of a monster buck grazing on the edge of the woods. Luckily he didn’t notice me right away so I was able to enjoy the view for a few moments before he leaped his way into the brush and disappeared. I tell ya, I wish I could wake up every morning and see a sight like that. |

With the buck gone, I continued on my way down into the many ravines that make our ranch a hunter’s paradise. With the rain on its way, the woods had that damp feeling and the lighting was dim. The moist smell brought back memories of some of the hunts I’ve had where you arrive dry and leave soaking wet, but with a grin on your face. That’s one of the best things about hunting; the experience is usually always enjoyed.
As I continued my way through the ravine I made a brief stop to take in the sight of the creek that runs through the ranch and its sounds. While I did so, I caught a glimpse of something up on the ridge on the other side of the creek from me. Now mind you some of these ridges are pretty steep and high up, but to my surprise that didn’t bother this monster buck that was looking down at me with a curious gaze. For a moment I thought it was the one I had seen earlier, but as I stood there watching I noticed that this buck was slightly larger with more mass. |

Boy what a treat, two monster bucks in one day and within an hour of each other. This sure had me grinning, but just like the last buck, this one continued on his way up the ridge and disappeared out of sight. With a shake of my head I started to wish I was one of our hunters, because I sure do envy the size of bucks they will be getting this year.
With that thought in mind, I felt it was a good note to leave on and made my way back to the lodge. And as I finish this article for the day, I can admit that I can’t wait to head back to the ranch and see these bucks again.
