Opening morning, my cameraman
and me set up a ground blind in one of the big bottoms at World Class
Whitetails of Ohio. It was a beautiful crisp morning, about 44 degrees.
We saw a few nice deer from
a distance but none close enough to shoot with my Pearson Bow.
After lunch we set up in one of the tree blinds and had some good action
coming down this ridge in front of us. A couple nice 160-170 class
deer passing by, but a little too fast for a good clean shot at them.
We had a great day on our first hunt and saw a total of fifty to sixty
deer and probably at least 10 of them in the 150-class range.
The second day we headed into
another ridge on the other side of the property. We got some incredible
footage for the show of deer coming down the ridges and actually laying
up in the bottoms where it is cool. There were some really nice bucks
that morning. We spent the morning trying to find a good
buck close enough to shoot but to no avail. Even though the bucks never
seen us slipping through the woods or sitting, they seem to know something
was up and were all staying just out of bow range.
At lunch we set up a ground
blind on the side of an alfalfa field and got ready for an evening hunt.
At three o'clock we got in the blind and within thirty minutes, deer
starting emerging like ghost from the right side of the blind, approximately
100 yards away.
All of a sudden a nice 12 point
buck come from no where from the left side of our blind and starting
feeding with 40 yards from our blind. Bucks starting pouring into
the field from everywhere but we kept our eye on the nice 12 point.
Finally after feeding for about 45 minutes on our far left side of the
blind, he starting coming out in front of us so I could get a nice shot
on him. I ask my cameraman, are you ready and he said no the buck
was behind a tree so he didn't have him on film. The bucked
turned around and got behind another buck as if new something was going
on. Finally my cameraman said, I got him clearly now, you can
shoot whenever you're ready. I had the bow at full draw for
over 5minutes waiting on this buck and finally I let the arrow fly.
The bow got hung up in the top of the blind and the shot went high,
piercing the spine of the buck. The buck took off however you
could tell he was hit hard. He ran off the field and me and my
cameraman both agreed to wait until the next morning to go looking for
our trophy.
The next morning we went out
looking for the buck and after about 15 minutes, we found him laying
on the edge of the field where we shot him. He was a nice 12 pointer
with tall tines, which is perfect for our premier showing of Monster
Trophy Whitetails. We could not have asked for a better buck.
Check out the entire hunt on the Pursuit Channel, Thursday night October
